Shawn Michaels Has Big Plan as Guest Referee For Wrestlemania 32
Late last year, WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels confirmed on Jim Ross’s podcast, the Ross Report, that WWE had reached out to him and made him an offer to come back and wrestle at this year’s WrestleMania 32. However, Michaels confirmed that he declined WWE’s offer.
Then, shortly before the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, fellow WWE Hall of Famer “Nature Boy” Ric Flair said that WWE was trying to get Michaels to come out of retirement and be a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble match, which is another offer that he obviously declined.
While WWE has been trying to get Michaels to come out of retirement since he officially decided to hang up the tights back in 2010, Michaels hasn’t been willing to come back and wrestle, saying that, in his opinion, his career ended perfectly and that he doesn’t want to come back and attempt to top something that he feels was a perfect way to go out.
Of course, Michaels ended his pro wrestling career by having back-to-back classic matches with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25 and WrestleMania 26.
Since his retirement, Michaels has had a major non-wrestling role at several WrestleManias, and according to Wrestling News, the “Heartbreak Kid” may have a major role at this year’s WrestleMania 32.
The rumored main-event for WrestleMania 32 is Triple H vs. Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. There is also some speculation that Triple H will have Vince McMahon in his corner, and Roman Reigns will have The Rock in his corner.
According to WrestlingNews.co’s report, WWE is considering having Shawn Michaels be the special guest referee in the Roman Reigns vs. Triple H match, which is an idea that makes a ton of sense, as The Authority will likely want to stack the deck against Reigns in the WrestleMania main-event.
Michaels has been heavily involved in some of Triple H’s WrestleMania matches in the past, most notably at WrestleMania 28, where he was the special guest referee in the Undertaker vs. Triple H Hell in a Cell match, and he ended up hitting “The Deadman” with the Sweet Chin Music, which led to Triple H hitting the Pedigree, and in that moment, many were convinced that Triple H was going to break Undertaker’s legendary undefeated streak.
Sting, who was Triple H’s opponent at last year’s WrestleMania 31, also felt Michaels’ Sweet Chin Music, as the “Heartbreak Kid” got involved in the match and kicked “The Icon” right in the chops.
There have been times where Michaels has played a major role in The Authority storyline as well, as he screwed Daniel Bryan out of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship back at Hell in a Cell in 2013.
Of course, the idea for Triple H and Roman Reigns is for “The Game” to lose the WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Reigns, and then The Rock, who will presumably be in Reigns’ corner, will endorse him as the new face of WWE. So, if Michaels is the guest referee, he likely won’t be there to cost Reigns the match.
Roman Reigns is set to take on both Dean Ambrose and Brock Lesnar in a triple threat match at WWE Fastlane to determine the number one contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, so if WWE is planning on making Shawn Michaels the guest referee for the WrestleMania main-event, the announcement will probably come after the WWE Fastlane show.
WWE does want to have Michaels do something at WrestleMania 32, since it’s taking place in his home state of Texas. So even if he doesn’t end up being the guest referee for Triple H vs. Roman Reigns, you should expect him to be on the show in some form, possibly in a segment with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, who may end up being the host of the show.
